True cost per unit = (unit price x quantity + delivery) divided by quantity. A lower sticker price with high delivery can cost more per unit than a higher price delivered cheaply. Always compare the landed cost.

Compare landed cost, not sticker price

The cheapest sticker price is not always the cheapest supplier. Delivery, minimum order sizes and discounts all change what you actually pay per unit by the time stock reaches your shelf.

Comparing the true landed cost per unit puts two quotes on equal footing. A supplier who charges a little more but delivers cheaply can easily beat one whose low price is wiped out by a high delivery fee.

Worked examples

Two quotes
  • A: KES 100 x 100 + KES 1,000 delivery is KES 101 per unit.
  • B: KES 95 x 100 + KES 2,500 delivery is KES 97.50 per unit. B wins.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two suppliers fairly?
Compare the true landed cost per unit, not the sticker price. Add each supplier's delivery cost to the order value and divide by the quantity, so delivery and order size are included.
Why is the cheapest price not always the cheapest supplier?
Because delivery, minimum orders and discounts change the real cost. A low unit price with expensive delivery can end up costing more per unit than a higher price delivered cheaply.
Should I always pick the cheapest per unit?
Cost per unit is the main factor, but also weigh reliability, payment terms and quality. A slightly pricier supplier who delivers on time and offers credit can be worth more than the cheapest.
Does order size matter?
Yes. Larger orders spread fixed delivery costs over more units, lowering the per-unit cost, but they also tie up more cash and risk dead stock. Balance the saving against the cash.
How does Veira help?
